Reversing the Senses
By Martin Hubbard
So, you’ve arrived. You’ve accomplished all the things you set out to achieve. This should be the greatest time of your life, right? But, there’s a nagging feeling that you can’t shake, and it is impacting your ability to lead your organization. Even worse… it’s affecting your health and home life.
Is there some practical way to effectively deal with it?
The answer is a resounding yes, according to Martin Hubbard, author of REVERSING THE SENSES (River Grove Books, 2014). In fact, that nagging feeling is actually very common to most high achievers. Many CEO’s
and business leaders feel like they’ll be exposed at any minute and people will discover that they are not as smart or capable as they are “supposed” to be, especially when holding lofty positions of power and prestige
Thankfully, the answers do not lie in achieving less or lowering our standards. Quite the opposite in fact. Making external changes are only temporary fixes at best. The changes have to come from within. It is possible to alter the way we see the world and our place in it
through internal habit and discipline. Hubbard calls this “Reversing the Senses” and the results have been stunning for the many leaders and high achievers he works with on a daily basis.
It’s a simple concept, really. “To reverse the senses is to challenge what you are sensing or feeling, create mental space so you can analyze your experiences objectively, and then consciously choose truthful and empowering perceptions,” Hubbard explains. “Overcoming the undertow of negative emotions and reprogramming your brain to view things differently so you can both choose and act from a positive space.”
He elaborates: “Reversing one’s senses allows them to break free from the chains of negative emotions by acting from positive thoughts instead. In short, it means to flip the switch from feeling bad and making unnecessary mistakes, to thinking clearly, positively and choosing wisely.” Hubbard calls his system for making this change “The Core Process,” and there are five principles:
1. Your thoughts determine your ultimate result
2. Your emotions influence your thoughts, and vice versa
3. Most thoughts and emotions are subconscious: Awareness is the first step of change
4. True success is internal harmony
5. Managing your thoughts and emotions increases your internal capacity to lead and achieve
